Olympiacos 2-0 Aston Villa (6-2) LIVE REACTION: Premier League humilated with final team crashing out of Europe as El Kaabi haunts Emery again

Aston Villa suffered Europa Conference League semi-final heartbreak after crashing out with a 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos.

The Premier League side already had a mountain to climb in Greece following a 4-2 defeat at Villa Park in the first leg.

Unai Emery’s side followed that loss up with another against Brighton at the weekend and failed to bounce back in Europe.

Villa started the brighter of the two sides but were sucker-punched by Ayoub El Kaabi adding his fifth of the tie ten minutes in.

Villa tried as they might to engineer a comeback but couldn't break down Olympiacos' stubborn defence.

And any faint hope of a dramatic finish was extinguished by El Kaabi 12 minutes from time as the hosts set up a Europa Conference League final date with Fiorentina.

"We have enjoyed getting here," he said. "To win a trophy in Europe is very difficult. To get here you have to be consistent, but if we don't win, the process is clear.

"Maybe we could be a favourite before the first leg, but they show us their power and how they want to be a contender and now they are favourite. I will prepare us to come back, but our process does not change.

"In the Premier League, we are having a fantastic season. We have to enjoy both competitions. We have to be proud of our work."

  • 'We have a mountain to climb'

John McGinn, speaking after the 4-2 home loss to Olympiakos, said: "Not the game we wanted. We wanted a lot more control. We started the game well. They're a good side. We wanted a victory going to Greece. We showed we're capable of coming back.

"Mistakes all round. We'll take responsibility but it's up to us to go to Athens and turn it around because we're capable. They played very well tactically. They played the way we expected so there were no surprises.

"Everything that could have gone wrong did. The manager was still positive in there. There's still a long way to go. We need to play a lot better than we did but we're more than capable of doing it.

"The onus is on us to attack Olympiakos and score some goals. We have a mountain to climb but we know we're capable."

  • Luiz wants to stay on penalty duty

The Brazilian suffered a costly miss in the first leg but is is keen to make amends should he need to tonight.

"I am the main taker and I know it is my responsibility," he said.

"The one who takes is the only one who can miss. If we have another penalty, I will take it. I am mentally strong for that."

The Premier League side are out warming up pre-match!

Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa have led Villa out in front of a steadily building atmosphere at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki.

  • Us and Em

Unai Emery is a top-two manager in the division.

That is the view of ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, who has had his say on the best - and worst - top-flight bosses.

  • One in Emil

Chelsea are expected to reignite their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez as their search for a new number one intensifies, talkSPORT understands.

As reported in Alex Crook's transfer notebook, the Blues were keen on signing Argentina World Cup winner Martinez last summer, but were reluctant to pay big money.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino remains a big admirer of his fellow countryman, as is the club’s head goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts having come close to signing Martinez for Brighton.

Villa recorded losses of £119.6million last year, sparking fears they may have to sell players to stay on the right side of Premier League PSR rules.
